Self-Publishing Virgin

No, Self-Publishing Virgin is not the title of my next book (Haha…wait… that is a great idea! NO! Focus, Erin!)

*slaps self silly*

Okay… I’m ready to be a serious, professional member of the blogiverse… *crickets chirping*

OKAY!  You caught me… I am neither serious nor professional, but I am a Self-Publishing Virgin.  I began my self-publishing journey in January 2018, however, I had been posting several books on Wattpad.  (check me out:  I joined Wattpad in 2013, but didn’t have the courage to actually post anything until last year.  Then it happened.  I began researching self-publishing after noticing a fellow Wattpader’s success story with Amazon.  I admit it, I was jealous.  Then came the fever!  I became obsessed with learning everything and anything about self-publishing.

Since then, I have self-published three novellas (between 5k to 10k words) and let me tell you… they suck.  They were my test books as a way to get my feel for how the whole self-publishing process works.  It was hard work for only a small success.  Can you imagine what other self-publishers who are widely more successful must go through?

Let me reiterate that I am by no means a pro when it comes to self-publishing as stated in the title of this post, but I do believe I’ve learned a lot since last year.  Amazon is…. amazoning!  It has all the tools that you need to create a fantastic self-published book.  Do I think there is room for improvement?  Hell to the yes!

I work full-time for a lawyer and let me tell you, there is not enough time in the run of a day to write when you work full-time, have a dog and basically live.  My family thinks I’m crazy.  So let me break down a typical day in the life of Erin for you, so you too can think I’m crazy:

Monday to Friday:

Wake up at 6:30 a.m. – let my dog outside for a potty break, feed dog, play/exercise dog until second alarm goes off.

From 7:00 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. I am literally showering, blow-drying my hot mess of hair and running up my stairs to the kitchen to scramble to make lunch.

From 8:15 a.m. I am stuck in traffic and slowly making my way to my parking lot in the bustling city.  I usually jam out to some tunes to brighten my mornings!

From 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. I work, hard! (Yes, I do sneak some writing time here and there during breaks/lunch and during those slow days where I want to peel my face off.

From 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. I am racing back home to feed the dog, eat something (probably unhealthy) and walk the dog for an hour (hard, as he is very energetic, but I love him!)

Home by 7:30 p.m. from our walk and on my computer writing like the devil is chasing me until 10:30 p.m.

I usually pass out around 10:30 p.m. (I get grouchy if I don’t get my beauty sleep)

The answer is… we don’t.

Self-Publishers, true, committed self-publishers, just make it happen.  They sacrifice a lot of blood, sweat and tears to make themselves truly successful.  I hope one day, I can look back on this time as being a Self-Publishing Virgin and laugh (and maybe drink).

Thank you for taking a glance at my first blog post.  Don’t forget to tip your waiters/waitresses, pat a dog, smell the flowers and just enjoy life while we have it.

♥ Erin
